Exercise 34A Identifying different types of development Key Skills
Success criteria
I can categorise developments under diff erent categories.
Development is about improvement. For example, medical developments help to improve how we care for people who are sick. Many diseases have become rare because of vaccines, and physiotherapy has allowed people who suff ered strokes or serious injuries to regain use of their bodies.
There are diff erent types of development: ● Personal development is the activities that a person does to improve their skills, knowledge and quality of life. These include eating well and exercising, being aware of their skills and areas they need to develop.
● Social development involves helping people to reach their full potential because it is good for society, such as providing education.
● Economic development is when a country becomes wealthier. Its people can get better paid jobs and have higher standards of living.
● Cultural development is when activities such as music, drama, sporting events and celebrations of diff erent cultures are promoted to benefi t society. Cultural development improves people’s standard of living because it is about enjoyment rather than just work.
● Political development is when politicians bring about improvements in the best interests of everyone in society.
Development can often be controversial because people have diff erent views about how or whether a development should happen. For example, some people are opposed to a 34-storey development in Cork that has been given planning permission.
Look at the examples on the next page and identify what type of development is taking place. If you think there no development is taking place, tick none.
