Exercise 23B Debating rights in conflict Key Skills
Success criteria
I can give my opinion on a confl ict of rights and explain my opinion.
When rights come into confl ict, it is important to: 1. Understand why each side thinks as they do
2. Resolve the problem. This can be achieved by: ● Trying to get each side to see the other side of the issue ● Seeing if an agreement can be made in which each side compromises ● Accepting that sometimes one side is more in the right than the other.
In many cases, people never get a chance to give their side of a story and the other side is the one everybody hears. Many people are unable to stand up for themselves and rely on others to make people aware of their side. These include people who cannot read or write or who are afraid of being persecuted when their rights are threatened.
You are going to take part in a walking debate based on the following motions: 1. It is ok to discriminate against someone because some rights are more important than others.
2. When the rights of adults and children come into confl ict, adults’ rights should get priority because adults know better.
You will need to think about how you can justify your position, listen to other students’ viewpoints and refl ect on others’ responses. These factors can lead to you changing position.
