Exercise 2D Understanding stereotyping and its impact Key Skills
Success criteria
I can explain what stereotyping is, why it happens and how it makes me feel.
Stereotypes are when people believe that a particular person or group will look or behave in a certain way, just because of their age, sex, nationality or any other factor. For example, a common stereotype about Irish men in the past was that they were always drunk. Stereotypes can be positive as well as negative, such as the belief that women are kinder than men.
Discrimination is when a person or a group is treated unfairly based on race, age, religion, sex or other factors. An example would be a qualifi ed person not getting a job because they were seen as being too old.
Prejudice is when a negative opinion is formed about a person or a group without knowing enough about them. It is not based on experience. For example, some think that people who are overweight are lazy. If people are prejudiced against a person or a group, they are more likely to have a negative attitude towards them, have a stereotypical view of them and discriminate against them.
