Introduction Focus on the title of the lesson: Lifelong learning. Check understanding of the concept. Elicit whether students understand that for their careers in healthcare they will have to study all through their careers, and whether that prospect appeals to them.

First get students to discuss the questions, then feed back with the whole class. (You could write their answers on the board to compare.)

Focus on the diagram and ask students what this may refer to. Look also at the images on page 87 as these are related to the diagram and elicit what these suggest.

Grammar for reading: Predicting content after a linking word – and/but


Remind students about the linking words and/but in the listening lesson in this unit on page 83.


Elicit from students what kind of information comes after and and but. If necessary, give simple examples:


I like A & E and I love oncology, too. I don’t like orthopaedics, but I love nursing.


Give students time to read the sentence endings in the box. Then tell students that each ending comes after a sentence in the text. Refer students to the text on page 87 and go over the example. Then ask students to read and complete individually. Tell them to try to deal with new words as they go. Explain that there is further work on the vocabulary later. Students can compare in pairs. Elicit answers. Check with the full text in the Resources on Course Book page 157.
