I’m a nurse in a Lilongwe hospital. Let me tell you a few things about Malawi. The population of Malawi is around 16 million people. Fifteen million, nine hundred and six thousand in 2012, to be precise. Malawi is a very rural country. Most people live in the countryside. 84% of Malawians don’t live in cities. More than 600,000 babies are born every year. But the population is not growing, because a lot of them die: in 2012, 43,000 children under five died. One of the reasons is that more than 90% of the children are not vaccinated. It’s not a surprise that life expectancy is very low: 54.8 years. Things are better now than in the past. Now, 73.2% of babies are born in hospitals or health centres. Also, a lot of people in Malawi now have better drinking water. In the countryside, 81.7% of people can use it for drinking and cooking. In cities, 94.6% of people have clean water. But the government doesn’t spend a lot of money on healthcare. For every person in Malawi, they only spend US$18.8 per year. We need much more to improve healthcare in our country. And people need to earn more money. The average income of a Malawian is only US$320 per year!

Grammar for writing: Subject, verb, object (SVO)


Go over the information in the table after completing Exercise E. Remind students of what subjects and verbs are. Objects are often nouns, noun phrases or pronouns.


The general rule behind finding SVO is: the subject (S) does the verb (V) to the object (O). Example: The government contributes US$18.8 per person per year.


Adjectives and prepositions can be part of an object, but they can’t be the object themselves.
