Unit 4: You’re welcome!
Grammar for reading: Finding the object
Tell students that finding the object in a sentence will help them with their reading. In these sentences, finding the object is quite easy, but in the future they will read much longer sentences and the object will be more difficult to find.
Go through the information in the box. Set the task. (You can, as a review of earlier work, also let students identify the subjects and verbs.) Elicit answers using a visual medium.
Possible answers
You see a lot of patients every day. They notice your appearance. In hospitals, workers often wear colour- coded uniforms. Wear a clean uniform every day. Some organizations don’t wear uniforms. In that case, women should use conservative make-up and men should normally wear a smart shirt. Your appearance makes an impression – good or bad!
It’s my care …
Identify longer subjects and objects in SVO sentences Research information for a short report Write a paragraph for a report
Introduction The questions in the survey touch upon the three aspects of patient-centred care: empathy, personal relationships and communication.
A
Focus on the visuals of the various types of medical facility. Elicit other facilities (e.g., doctor’s surgery, physiotherapist’s practice, radiology lab, etc.). Elicit students’ experience with the ones shown. Students read the first question of the questionnaire, answer it for themselves and compare their answers with others in a group or the whole class.
Answers Students’ own answers.
B
In pairs, students ask and answer the remaining questions, and compare.
Answers Students’ own answers.
Grammar for writing: Longer subjects and objects Work through the examples, and then get students to answer the parts of speech question. They are nouns and pronouns + prepositions, and adjectives. Point out that long subjects mean that there are sometimes two or three nouns before the verb. Long objects mean that there are sometimes two or three nouns before the next sentence.
Direct students to the four highlighted sentences in the survey on page 58. Set the task for individual work. Feed back as a whole class.
Answers
(Subjects are underlined, verbs are circled and objects are boxed.)
You share a room/bathroom with other patients. (‘with other patients’ is other information) Most patients in a hospital prefer rooms for more than one person. I want a room for myself. Many young patients want Wi-Fi in their room. (‘in their room’ is other information)
