Draw students’ attention to the photograph. Ask: What can you see? (Two nurses at a workstation.) Ask them why the staff wear different colour uniforms (different jobs). What two jobs are represented? Accept any reasonable suggestions as the purpose here is to invite interest in the unit.

Introduction This lesson introduces vocabulary connected with the topic of nursing: types of nurses and responsibilities. Nurses form the biggest group of employees in healthcare, and they can work in a very large variety of workplaces. The nursing profession is predominantly female, although the number of male nurses is rising (generally between 8 and 10 per cent). It’s impossible to cover all types of nursing, but a variety is highlighted. Some of the activities help you to highlight these. Nurses practise in clinics, on cruise ships, in hospices, hospitals (the largest number), industry (occupational health), long-term care facilities (aged care, palliative care), military facilities, pharmaceutical companies (researchers), physician’s rooms, private homes, retirement homes, schools and camps. Some nurses may also advise and work as consultants in the healthcare, legal or insurance sectors.

Students brainstorm the names for different types of jobs they can remember from previous units – elicit as wide a variety as possible: by now, students should be able to come up with examples from various areas that have been dealt with before. Then, get students to say what these people actually do: what services in healthcare do they offer? It could be helpful to write down the verbs students use on the board, so others can use them in their definitions. Compare with the whole class.

a. I work with patients with all kinds of heart problems. My patients are not having surgery yet. They are often afraid of the future, and easily tired, but they need a lot of exercise. They need to work very hard.


b. I love my job. I help mothers when they deliver their babies. I sometimes have to help in the operating room for a caesarean section. Most parents are really happy when they leave. It’s a very satisfying job.


c. My job is very challenging. The brain is wonderful, but things can go very wrong. I care for patients with strokes and brain injuries. They are often very afraid and confused.


d. My patients have something wrong with their bones. Especially with their hips and knees. Sometimes they have broken bones in an accident, or they have a disease in their bones. I help them move easily again.


e. I work in a public health centre. I help families get quality health services and give health information to a community. I work with people from very different cultures all the time.


f. A nurse in the operating theatre helps the surgeon to make sure the operation is successful. It’s a lovely job, but it’s very busy. I need organizational skills!


g. Sick people need good nurses, but especially children. It’s very different from adults. It’s great to work with children, though. Oh, and I never forget the parents of the sick children. They also need care.


h. A lot of people have mental health problems. I administer their medication and often help with treatment. I need lots of patience. Mental health patients are often unpredictable.

Students match the photos with the job names from Exercise B and copy the names underneath. Before students write the names of the jobs, elicit as much information about what they can see in the photos: who the people are, what is happening, what machines or devices are visible, etc. Write as much information as you can on the board.


Content note The term midwife refers to both women and men who perform this job, also referred to as a labour and delivery nurse. This branch of healthcare is called midwifery (pronounced with two short \I\ sounds).
