Tony Baker: Good morning. My name’s Tony Baker. I’m your lecturer this term. Today we are talking about the health industry. Let me start with a question for you. What is healthcare? Well, the healthcare industry is one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing industries. It’s all around you, because everybody uses it. We divide the healthcare industry into two sectors: Firstly, hospital services. Lots of things happen in hospitals, of course, but a good example of a hospital activity is the emergency department. After an accident, people go here. It’s for very urgent things. Another example is clinics, for instance a cancer clinic. People with cancer go there to get better. A third example is X-ray departments. They take medical photos there. The second sector is the biggest group. It’s other healthcare services. Hospitals don’t do everything. That’s why there are other healthcare services. For example, people in pathology labs test blood and other things. They send the results to the doctor. Dentists work in dentist’s surgeries and fix your teeth when you have a toothache. A third example of other healthcare services is fitness centres. People go there to get fit again. All these six examples are only a small part of the healthcare industry.
D
Give students time to think of more examples. It will depend on their familiarity with the subject matter, and their level of English, whether they will be able to come up with suggestions. Allow the use of a dictionary. If you have access to the internet, they can also look examples up.
Possible answers
Hospitals: all kinds of hospital departments, e.g., X-ray, cardiology, maternity departments, pharmacy, etc. Other health services: care homes, GP surgeries, community health clinics, medical massage, music therapy, speech therapy, homeopathy, etc.
a or an / singular or plural?
Understand the difference between a and an Recognize and say singular and plural nouns
Introduction Check students understand what a noun is, by eliciting examples of nouns from the unit so far. Write a list of singular and plural nouns on the board without looking in the book: a practice, doctors, a nurse, dentists, etc. Add examples of uncountable nouns which may be less obvious to the class, for example healthcare. Remind students that regular plurals will have ~s on the end of the word.
