My name is Joan. I work in a hospital. I work in the hospital kitchens and I am responsible for environmental policies. We try to be as green as possible. One example is our hospital kitchen. So, what do we do? Well, for a start, only local produce is used. All our hospital food, from potatoes to fresh meat, is bought in small quantities at local markets from specialist hospital providers, so the food miles are very low. Our fruit and vegetables don’t have much packaging because they don’t travel very far. Of course, in winter for example, we can’t get strawberries or tomatoes, so we don’t put them on the menu. So that’s the food. The next point is energy conservation. So, our hospital kitchen is equipped with A-rated fridges and freezers. A-rated means they are very efficient and they don’t use much electricity. On top of that, we installed solar panels about two years ago, so a lot of our electricity is created by solar energy now. But that’s not all. We recycle all waste food. It goes to a company that makes compost out of it. That’s very environmentally friendly, right?

My name is Harry. I’m the environment officer at the hospital. Look, the environment is important to us and to our patients. In fact, we want to reduce our carbon footprint by 50% by 2025. How are we going to do that? The main thing is our hospital is very efficient, because we have all the energy-saving features such as low-energy bulbs, A-rated windows and lots of insulation. Oh, and our air conditioning uses the latest technology and is also very efficient. Another thing is that we encourage patients and their visitors to think about the environment. In some hospitals, patients use new towels every day, but in our hospital they reuse their towels for two days. As a result, fewer towels are used by our patients and that means less washing. Also, we have recycling bins throughout the hospital. Visitors can put plastic bottles in one bin and paper in another bin. A lot of rubbish is put into these bins and it is all recycled. It’s amazing. Of course, we can’t reduce our carbon footprint to zero. We need air conditioning in summer and heating in winter. So, finally, we offset our carbon emissions. We pay money to an environmental organization. They plant trees and organize environmental projects. In that way, some of the environmental damage is reduced.
