Draw students’ attention to the photograph. Ask: What can you see? (A hospital sign showing directions to different departments.) Ask students to name any other departments they know. Accept any reasonable suggestions as the purpose here is to invite interest in the unit.

Introduction This unit focuses on healthcare services by general practitioners (GPs) worldwide. Refer back to the Primary Care Centres students learnt about in Unit 1, and the position of the GP in those. There are many more services available, of course, from GP surgeries and Primary Care Centres, than the ones mentioned here.

GPs do many different things. I’m a GP in Vietnam. What do I do? Ok, here are some examples of my work. People want to start a family. They come to me to talk about it. They’re very happy. I give children, or people who travel, injections. It is safe for them. Many people weigh too much. They are too heavy. I help them. I work in a Primary Care Centre. When parents have a baby, we take care of them and their baby. Older people come to me often. I check that their blood pressure is OK. It’s very important to check your skin. I do that for people. I love my work!

Extra practice with strong students Ask students for more services that they think GPs or Primary Care Centres might deliver. Students work in pairs for a few minutes. Elicit some of their ideas. Don’t worry if they can’t think of the names: let them describe the services and allow them, if possible, to look answers up on the internet if that is available to you.

Possible answers: diabetes care, ear cleaning, chronic disease management, cryo-therapy (freezing skin lesions, an example of minor surgery), chiropody (foot care), referrals to specialists, etc.
B 1.–2.
Give students time to study the photos again. They discuss in pairs or groups which services they are, or are not, interested in delivering if they were a GP. Elicit their reasons.
C
1. Students look at Table 1. Check students understand the title of the table. Explain they must first predict the order of importance of these services. Elicit, but do not confirm or correct.
2. Play the recording and students write down the
percentages they hear. Students discuss answers in pairs. After a couple of minutes, elicit answers, but do not confirm or correct.
3. Students check their answers to C1. They can now work out if they transferred the correct information about any of the services in the first task.
