1. Give students time to study the nouns in the box and the photos on the slides on page 9. Divide the class into pairs, and then set a two-minute time limit to describe what they see on the slides. Elicit and compare.


2. Students match the word groups in the box with the slides on page 9. (Health centre is the word group that does not match with a slide.) They do not complete the slides at this stage.


3. Students look at the examples in the word box. They suggest the grammar rule underlying the use of a/an.

Listening skill: Using slides for understanding


Give students time to read the information about the listening skill. In a monolingual class, you can translate the information. Otherwise, the meaning should become clearer during the activities. Refer back to the information after students have completed the lesson activities.

1. Exploit the photo on page 8. Ask: What’s the man in the photo doing? Elicit possible answers, such as: He’s teaching/giving a lesson/giving a presentation, etc. Check understanding and pronunciation of the word slide. Explain the listening is quite long because it is a talk; they will hear only one person speaking (i.e., it is not a conversation). Students do not need to understand every word. Play the recording. Elicit from students what


the talk is about, but do not confirm or correct at this stage.


2. Play the recording again. Students number the


slides in the order they hear them. This is the most basic skill in listening to an extended turn/one-way listening: being able to follow the speaker through a number of topics or points.


Play the recording one more time for students to


add the speaker’s examples to the slides. They can refer to the word box on this page for the spelling.


4. Students compare answers in pairs.
