This activity can be done in class or for homework. Preferably, students should write their CV on a computer. This is a ‘real-life’ task and students should actually be able to use this CV to apply for jobs or courses. Remind students to use the points from ‘How to write a perfect CV’ in the Resources on CB page 164.


Students should write a first draft, and then show it to another student, or you, for editing.


Students should write a final version that they can use for applications where English is required.

Introduction Don’t try to explain the heading at this point. Say that students will understand by the end of the lesson. Instead, focus on the subheading and elicit what students understand by the term ‘body language’. If necessary, refer them to the photographs below.

Students read Body Talk. In pairs or groups, they then try to recall the examples of the cultural differences mentioned without looking at the text, e.g., In some Latin American cultures, people stand closer together when they talk. Depending on where your students are from, they can add information about their own culture. They can also give their opinion about the examples mentioned, if they feel they don’t agree or want to refine the facts.

This vocabulary should be very familiar to the students – set a time limit of one minute for completion of the first activity. Elicit answers, keeping the pace up.
