Introduction Refer students to the subheading. Ask students: Why should healthcare workers make a good impression on patients? Elicit a few ideas, but do not confirm or correct. If students don’t have any ideas, leave the question hanging.

The first activity briefly reviews the three aspects of patient-centred care, as they are closely linked to the four Ps in this lesson. Divide the class into pairs to work on the activity. After a few minutes, elicit answers.

Extra practice Students think of their own quotes to illustrate the three aspects of patient-centred care and show them to each other in pairs or groups. They guess which aspect the quote is about.

1. Remind students they should always look at the headline(s), any photographs or illustrations, and the introduction or first paragraph carefully. This will help them to predict what the text will be about.
2. Write the words professional, presentable, personable and polite on the board, and let students guess what they mean. Give examples if it makes it clearer. Students then read each paragraph of the text on page 57 individually and match it to the correct heading.
3. Students look at the extra sentences in the box and match them to the headings.

Ask students to read through the article as a whole before they start the task. Students complete the task individually, and then compare answers in pairs. Monitor and give help where necessary. Elicit answers.

2. You can show this by being very helpful, but at the same time making it clear to them that you are doing a job for your employer. You are not their friend.
