The care plan cycle

Predict content after a linking word (because, so) when listening

Use active listening to understand a talk about the care plan cycle

Understand and use vocabulary on the topic of the care plan cycle

Introduction Write the heading on the board. Explain that in healthcare, treatment of any condition has to be carefully planned.

A

Pre-teach the term care plan cycle. Set the activity for individual work and pairwork checking. Students study Figure 1. Elicit ideas about a ‘cycle’.

Answers

1. The title indicates the talk is going to be about planning medical treatment for patients.

2. The steps you need to take in medical treatment happen over and over again: they are like a circle (refer back to the diagram): once you reach the end, you start at the beginning again. Once a medical professional has evaluated the treatment, he or she also needs to assess the patient’s health again.

B

Remind students that what they are going to listen to is a seminar. Write seminar on the board. Check the type of communication they will hear – a tutor and students. It is not a lecture – maybe the tutor will make a point and then ask a question and the students will be allowed to speak. Refer students to Figure 1 and give them time to write the words into the spaces in the diagram prior to listening. Do not assist and do not confirm or correct.

1. 2.

Play the recording. Students check their answers. Play the recording. Students listen and repeat the

nouns. Correct pronunciation, tone and stress where necessary.

3. In pairs or groups, students write down the verbs derived from these nouns. They can use a dictionary to check. Feed back orally.

4. Play the recording. Students listen and repeat

both verbs and nouns. Correct pronunciation, tone and stress where necessary.

Good morning, everyone. Today we’re talking about the care plan cycle. A cycle is a process in stages, and it goes round and round. When you come to the end, you start at the beginning again. So, what do you do when a patient comes to see you?

Student 1: I find out what the problem is? Lecturer:

Student 2: Is it analysis?

Lecturer: Correct. It is analysis. What next? Student 3: I treat the patient. Lecturer: Well, that is a next step, but not the next step. What do you do before you treat the patient?

Student 1: We think about the treatment? And about why we give the treatment?

Lecturer: That’s right. We need to plan before we treat. Student 3: Ah, OK, and then we treat the patient. Lecturer:

Yes, exactly. Then we implement the plan. So … we are treating the patient during the implementation stage. The patient gets better. Then finally … What? What happens in the end? What is the last step?

Student 2: We look at how things went? Lecturer:

Exactly. It’s the evaluation stage. We evaluate. We check. And then, if we need to, we start again. We assess, analyze, plan, implement and evaluate.
