Transcript 102 Yasmin:

Send me a message

General Ward. Good morning. Yasmin speaking.

Dr Gomez: Can I speak to Arnel, please? Yasmin:

I’m sorry. I’m afraid he’s not here at the moment. Can I take a message?

Dr Gomez: Yes, please. Could he phone me when he gets back?

Yasmin: Sure. Can I have your name please? Dr Gomez: It’s Dr Gomez. Yasmin: Sorry. Could you spell that? Dr Gomez: Of course. G-O-M-E-Z. Yasmin: Thanks, Dr Gomez. And your number? Dr Gomez: 61 2 675 441. Yasmin: Sorry. Could you repeat that? Dr Gomez: Yes, it’s 61 2 675 441. Yasmin: Thank you. I’ll give him your message. Dr Gomez: Thanks, Yasmin.

Set up the role plays carefully. Refer students to the Resources on CB pages 159 and 169. Students prepare and practise. Students take messages in their notebooks. Note any case where it is clear that the message-taker has not recorded the message accurately.

Feed back, writing key phrases and sentences on the board.

Answers Students’ own answers.

E

Point out that this is the key moment in leaving and taking messages: checking whether the message taken was correct. Is the written message the same as the spoken message? Raise any issues of discrepancy between a spoken and a written message that you or the students notice, e.g., wrong time, person or number. Try to work out with the students involved how it happened.

Answers Students’ own answers.

Subject

What is the text about?

Understand the time reference of a sentence from the verb

Understand the subject, purpose and deadline in a message Prioritize work

A

Set for individual work and pairwork comparison. Feed back, getting an idea of how much email traffic your students have and what it is about. With a good class, have a general discussion about this amount of traffic. Is it distracting/difficult to deal with/useful? Do you ever get overloaded?

Reading skill: Understanding the subject, the purpose and the deadline in a text

Ask students to read the text in the box, then cover the box and try to remember the information in pairs and then as a whole class. Get the information on the board in a diagram, and leave this on the board throughout the lesson if possible.

Text Purpose

Why did the writer send the message?

Deadline

When must you reply/ get the

information? Sending information

Requesting information

Giving instructions

Set the exercise for pairwork. Although this is a reading task, which is normally an individual activity, in this case, it is probably best if students find examples and point them out to their partner as they find them. Feed back, getting a few examples of each type of purpose, correcting if necessary.
