So why is Lismore Hospital different … different from St Vincent’s? There is one big difference. Yes, just one! St Vincent’s is a private hospital and Lismore Hospital is a public hospital. Let’s compare the two. People say they get better care and better doctors at St Vincent’s: it has a good reputation. You can choose your own doctor. There are no waiting lists. You can get more extras, like physiotherapy and dental work. St Vincent’s location is very good – it is in the middle of the small town, and it’s easy to reach. But private healthcare comes with a price. St Vincent’s is more expensive. Patients are often in private rooms, but they cost a lot. You can choose your own doctor, but their fees are high. There are waiting periods for ‘elective’ surgery. That’s surgery that is not really necessary. Lismore Hospital has an OK reputation: people think the care is OK, the doctors are OK. But you can’t choose your own doctor and there are long waiting lists for every operation. The good thing is that there is a larger variety of care at Lismore Hospital. They can do more things. The price? Well, Lismore Hospital is a public hospital, so most healthcare is free, or you only pay a little. But there are no private rooms, and the rooms are not as good. The location of this hospital is not as good as St Vincent’s. It’s outside of town, but patients don’t really mind about location because it’s cheaper. So, good services are important. Of course they are. You must offer good services. But people must know that your services are good. A good reputation is very, very important. Price is important, but most people just want good healthcare. Good facilities and lots of extras are more important than price in many cases. People usually go to services in good locations, but patients go where the care is best and cheapest. So, how can the hospitals improve? Well, there are two ways. In healthcare, it is more important to communicate with your patients. How? Social media is a good way to connect. You can inform patients about medications, operations and your facilities. You can send patients and their families a newsletter. You can have a website with lots of downloadable, clear information. You can organize events for people. Hospitals can also work together. Are there no beds in Lismore Hospital? Then patients can go to St Vincent’s. How can they do that? I’m going to give you the answer to that question next time. Thanks for watching today.

Elicit one or two ideas, and then ask students to discuss in pairs or small groups. Encourage students to make notes of their ideas. Then ask a few students to report back the ideas on their list to the class. Ask students if they can see any problems with the solutions.
Possible answers
Both hospitals could set up a communication strategy with their patients and their families. They could also work together, e.g., to resolve any issues with empty beds.
G
Explain that students can talk about local or international hospitals (or other forms of healthcare). Elicit examples for one of or both the questions and tell students to try to use some of the vocabulary and ideas from the lesson. Students continue discussing answers in pairs or small groups. Monitor and then finally elicit some of the students’ ideas.
Answers
Students’ own answers, but here are some points to consider: students might choose to go to a private or public hospital, because of: • communication • recommendations from other people • reputation • convenience • price • reliability
Grammar for listening: Predicting the next word
Go through the information and tell students they often predict the next word in their first language when they listen, and need to learn to do it in their second language, too.
Play the recording. Students will probably be
unfamiliar with the listening activity, so it will need careful setting. Repeat the activity a second time once students have got the idea.
