Explain that students will listen to the second part of Mr Dickens’ talk. Exploit the visuals only on the slides: What type of department is this? What type of healthcare do you get here? Draw students’ attention to e.g., on two of the slides, indicating examples.


Pre-teach the words on the slides and check understanding. Use mime, show pictures, make drawings on the board, offer right/wrong translation into L1, etc. Play the recording.


Students complete the slides in pairs. Help them with spelling difficult or unknown words. Write any issues on the board. Elicit answers and check.

Let’s have a look at some other hospital departments now. Where do patients go? Some people go to hospital for scans. They don’t go to their GP for this. Scans are special medical photos. For example, perhaps your leg is broken, or you have a cancer. Doctors have to look inside your body. These patients go to the X-ray Department. Other patients go to the Coronary Unit. This is for people with heart diseases, such as blocked arteries. Some people have a heart attack and go into Intensive Care. There are patients who have broken limbs, like legs or arms. Some of these people are in lots of pain. They go to the Fracture and Pain Clinic. Doctors put a cast around their arms or legs and treat their pain. It isn’t for people with headaches! Some patients don’t get better quickly. They take a very long time. They need special training, including long-term care. So they go to the Rehabilitation Ward. They go there almost every day. So, you see there are many different types of patients, and many different parts of departments.


Listening skill: Using examples


Go over the information in the box. Point out that like can be a verb. When it is used for examples, it is a preposition: There are also patients who have broken limbs, like legs or arms.

Students call out when they hear the example words and phrases in the talk (see underlined words in the transcript). Ask students to look at the slides and give sentences using example words and phrases. NOTE Students will hear the word like used


colloquially as an adverb. It is used very commonly this way by younger people in the USA and the UK. For example, ‘She was, like, really angry. I said, like, “What are you talking about?”.’ In this case, it means in this way.

now because I have a broken leg. It hurts a lot. The doctor is taking scans of my leg. After that, I have to go to a special clinic. They’ll give me medicine and tell me how to deal with the pain on the plane home! This is the end of my holiday.


Extra activities for strong classes Print a copy of Transcript 52. Students write a similar text, involving a patient who has a condition and who has to visit at least one hospital department, preferably more. Other students guess which department(s).
