Jake: This episode is all about healthcare! So I hope you like it. Why healthcare today? Because I’m talking to Lindy, a student from the School of Nursing in Cardiff, Wales, in the UK. Lindy wants a career in nursing and she is just starting. Hi, Lindy. Thank you for talking to
be-a-nurse.com.
Lindy: Thanks for having me! Jake: Now, you tell me you want to become a nurse? What is your motivation for that?
Lindy: Yes, I want to be a nurse. My mother is a cardiac nurse and my brother is an orthopaedic nurse, so it runs in the family. I think I’d like to be a paediatric nurse. But I’m not sure. The area of nursing is important, but nursing itself is more important. I really enjoy taking care of people, and helping them!
Jake: Nursing is a very popular career choice at the moment, isn’t it?
Lindy: Yes, it is. A lot of my friends want to go into nursing, too.
Jake:
So what are you going to do? What is your career plan?
Lindy: I’m not sure where I’d like to work yet. I mean, nurses work everywhere, you know: in hospitals, but also in clinics … and cruise ships … care homes for the elderly … and so on. So anyway, firstly, I am doing an eight-week course to become a CNA.
Jake: What’s a CNA? Lindy: Ah, sorry. Well, there are lots of types of nurses. A CNA is a Certified Nursing Assistant. They help patients with daily living activities. They do some housekeeping, too. I’m doing that now, but then I want to do another course to become an LPN – that’s a Licensed Practical Nurse. In some countries they call them Licensed Vocational Nurses. An LPN studies longer than a CNA. The main responsibility of an LPN is to check vital signs, administer medications and keep records. They also manage CNAs.
Jake: OK, I think I understand. And do you want to go further in your career?
Lindy: Oh, yes, I want to become an RN. That’s a Registered Nurse. The main responsibility of an RN is patient care, but also coordination, health promotion and research. I have to do a bachelor’s degree for that.
Jake: More years to study!

Grammar for listening: Predicting content after a linking word – and/but
Remind students about the importance of predicting (see Unit 4 page 53).
It is important that students learn to predict the kind of information that comes next after the words and and but. However, these words are often unstressed by native speakers and are difficult to hear.
Go over the example sentences. Further check understanding of the words and and but by eliciting different ways to finish the sentences.
The vowel sound is schwa in each case. Play the recording. Elicit the answer
Lindy: Yep … And maybe … maybe after that, I want to become an APN – an Advanced Practice Nurse. I’d like to do that, but then I have to study for a master’s degree. APNs do preventative care, treatment and management of illnesses.
Jake: Wow, so you have a few years of study ahead of you, then!
Lindy: Oh, yes, but I am going to love it. Nursing is the best!
D Play the recording from Exercise C again. Focus
students on the notes. Make sure students understand they need to do two things: complete the notes and make a note of any definitions. If necessary, you can do this in two stages by playing the recording twice. Do not expect students to come up with the exact definitions as below. Help with any unknown vocabulary by writing it on the board, pronouncing it, spelling it, etc.
