Introduction Exploit the visual on page 14. Ask students about who they see first in their countries if they have a health problem. Compare and contrast. Write the phrase first point of contact and elicit what students think this means in the context of healthcare.

Students discuss the questions in groups and write down as many suggestions as possible. Check students understand the three questions and reassure them it doesn’t matter at this stage if they are not sure of the answers.

Reading skill: Recognizing text types Go through the information. Check understanding. Elicit two or three more text types, for example a course book, a notice, an advert, a web page, etc.


Point out the variety of texts to the right. Students identify the text types individually, and then compare answers in pairs. Elicit answers and give help with pronunciation. Tell students they should learn the words for the text types.

NOTE Students do not need to understand all the details, nor the source information in the graph, pie chart and table. Dealing with sources will be dealt with later in the course.

Check understanding of the meanings of the words in the table. Explain that students will need to find information from most of the texts in the case study to complete the table. Go over the example. Make sure students understand they should not write full sentences, but give short answers. Each answer will be a noun/nouns, or a number. Students complete individually, and then compare answers in pairs. Elicit answers, preferably using a visual medium.

Students work in groups and try to propose a solution to the problems.
