F Put students into groups of four.
1. Make sure students realize that each student in the group must pick one type of healthy living only. Monitor and assist. Focus them on the notes on page 113 which they can use. Make sure they realize they have to give their own ideas about the reason(s) for the development.
2. Remind students about practising. Students should say each of their target sentences at least five times at this stage, so give plenty of time. Monitor and deal with common errors.
3. Set up the talks. Tell listeners to check the words of the speaker with the information in Figure 1. Invite at least one student for each way of healthy living to the front of the class to give a ‘model’ talk.

Introduction Remind students about the nature of case studies – usually information about a person or a group of people with a specific problem which they solved, or failed to solve, or which the students must try to solve. Refer to the subheading – they will need to think about how ‘healthy living’ can go too far.
A
Point out to students that this lesson is about people like themselves who are experiencing issues despite trying to live a healthy life and doing, specifically, intensive fitness training. Get the students first to cover the whole of Exercise B, before suggesting answers for Exercise A. Students then study the photos and suggest ideas as to what might have gone wrong. Feed back with ideas from a number of pairs/groups, but do not confirm or correct yet. Ask questions to challenge students to explain their ideas.
Answers Students’ own answers.
B
Students first read the problem areas. Put them on the board or another visual medium and elicit whether students have ever experienced these things themselves. Students then read each quote individually and in their groups determine which problem area they are dealing with.
Answers big appetite
burnout
lack of sleep lack of time
C
1. In groups, students individually answer each of the questions. Then they compare answers in groups.
2. Still in their groups, students come up with advice for all the people in Exercise B: what should this person do to solve the problem?
Answers
Students’ own answers. Generally speaking, the answer is to find a better balance. All of these people went too far in whatever they did to stay healthy.
