Unit 10: Finding work

Unit opener page Be aware of, and arouse interest in, the topics for the unit

Draw students’ attention to the main photo. Ask: What can you see? (A young woman, who looks like she is waiting for someone or something.) Get students to describe her clothes, where she is sitting, and why she is there. Accept any reasonable answers at this stage, as the idea is to invite interest in the unit. (She’s probably there for a job interview. She’s in some kind of reception area.)

Get students to look at the Wordle. Ask how many words they know, but do not give feedback at this stage.

Who are you?

Recognize target vocabulary for the unit: the job application process Become familiar with typical interview questions

Introduction This unit takes the students through the application process, from applying for a job, through the interview, to the first day in the new job.

A

Before you set the first activity, focus on the cartoons. Elicit some adjectives for the people or situations in some of the cartoons, e.g., hard-working, disorganized, confident and helpful. Discuss what work skills some of the cartoons show, e.g., good communication skills, dealing with patients, etc.

1. Focus students on the ten common interview questions on the Work4Health website. Give them two minutes to read through them. Elicit the meanings of new words, especially strengths, and its opposite weaknesses (not in the text). Students should be able to recognize them as the nouns from the base adjectives strong and weak. However, don’t go into too much explanation of new words as the following activities should help to clarify further. Divide the class into pairs. Students match each interview question with a quote. They write 1–10 in the first gap in each speech bubble. Monitor and give help where necessary. Do not elicit answers at this stage.

2. Play the recording so that students can check

their answers. Then go over any problem areas and replay the recording if necessary.

3. In pairs, students match the answers in the speech bubbles with the cartoons. They write A–J in the second gap in each speech bubble. Elicit answers.

4. Students work in pairs to remember the answers. This can be done as a written activity if you like. Alternatively, elicit the sentences. Decide if you

want students to give you the original sentence with complete accuracy, or if you think a roughly correct answer is sufficient.
