Presenter 1: Welcome to the show. Today we’re looking at healthcare. In a lot of countries, this is a very big industry.
Presenter 2:
Yes, healthcare is big, with lots of organizations. There are two big sectors: one: hospitals; two: other health activities.
Presenter 1: We all need healthcare at some point in our lives. And there is something for everyone.
Presenter 1: Hospital doctors and nurses take care of you when you a very ill. Surgeons operate on you, and X-ray operators take X-ray photos of your body. But you don’t always have to go to a hospital, of course.
Presenter 2: No, a lot of people in healthcare visit a health professional and then they go home again. Like a dentist, for instance. They look after your teeth.
Presenter 1: Yes, and a dentist works in a surgery. Presenter 2: Other people have a practice. Like a physiotherapist, for instance. A physiotherapist helps you move better. A GP, or general practitioner, is your family doctor. They have a practice too.
Presenter 1: And some health workers work in other places. Care workers often work in care homes, for instance.
Presenter 2: And then there are very specialized people, like lab technicians. They work in a lab, or laboratory.
Presenter 1:
Some health workers are more commercial. Like a pharmacist, for example, or a yoga instructor. They organize classes. There are so many jobs in healthcare. Let’s go and have a look in a hospital …

Explain to students they are going to practise short conversations. Go over the example. One student asks, Where is Photo c? Explain there are two possible answers every time. Divide the class into As and Bs. A and B pairs ask and answer with their books open. Then students swap roles. Monitor and give feedback.

1. Let the students guess which word doesn’t fit in each line, and why.
2. Remind the students of the two sectors in healthcare. Students put the words from Exercise B in the correct column. There will be discussion as to which category is the best one as the line between them is not always clear: some professions can fit in both columns – the value of this exercise also lies in discussing these options. Students give reasons for their choices, and add other examples.
3. Students underline their favourite jobs and share their ideas with a partner.
