Feeding relationships There are two ways to show the feeding relationships between the organisms in a habitat or ecosystem: • food chain • food web
Food chain A food chain describes feeding relationships using arrows to show which organism eats another. Look at the food chain in Fig. 9.7.

• Food chains start with a producer (a plant), e.g. grass. • The first arrow points to the consumer that eats the producer, e.g. a grasshopper eats the grass.
• The second arrow points to the consumer that feeds on the first consumer, e.g. a mouse eats the grasshopper.
• If the second consumer is also eaten, a third arrow points to the consumer that eats it, e.g. a sparrowhawk eats the mouse.
