EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION 22.4 How can we test the effectiveness of different indigestion tablets?
Equipment
Mortar and pestle Different brands of indigestion tablets Pipette and pipette filler Distilled water Beakers
Method
1. Using the mortar and pestle, grind the tablet being tested into a powder.
2. Using the pipette, measure out 25 cm3 water into a beaker.
3. Dissolve the tablet in 25 cm3 water. Stir using the glass stirring rod.
4. Add the distilled water and tablet solution to the conical flask with 2 drops of methyl orange indicator. Place the conical flask on the white tile.
5. Set up a burette using a retort stand and clamp. Fill the burette with the dilute hydrochloric acid using a funnel.
6. Add the hydrochloric acid from the burette to the conical flask until the indicator changes colour (orange to pink).
7. Record the volume of acid that was neutralised. 8. Follow steps 1–7 with different brands of indigestion tablets.
