EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION 35.1 How can we model the expanding universe?
Equipment Balloon Marker Ruler
Method 1. Draw three dots as far apart from each other as possible on an uninflated balloon. 2. Label the dots A, B and C. Each dot represents a celestial object, such as a star, planet or galaxy. 3. Measure and record the distance between each pair of dots, i.e. A to B, A to C, B to C.
4. Slightly inflate the balloon so it is at one-quarter of its full inflation. Measure and record the distance between each dot again.
5. Repeat the investigation for half inflation, three-quarters inflation and fully inflated (without bursting).
6. Record your observations of what happens to the dots as the balloon expands. A A A B C C C B B

2. Name the initial point from which the universe began. 3. Outline the Big Bang model of how the universe began.
