CHAPTER 17 – COMPOUNDS, MIXTURES AND SEPARATION OF MIXTURES
EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION 17.1 Which filter is best?
Equipment Mass balance Sand Graduated cylinder Water 2 beakers
Filters to be tested, e.g. different brands of coffee filters, filter paper, cloth
Retort stand and clamp Filter funnel
Method 1. Use the mass balance to measure out 10 g of sand. 2. Use a graduated cylinder to measure out 30 cm3
SAFETY • Clear up any spills immediately.
of water.
3. Mix the sand with the water in a beaker. 4. Use the mass balance to get the mass of the filter being tested. 5. Set up the apparatus for filtration as shown in Fig. 17.7. 6. Pour the sand and water mix through the filter. 7. Once the filtrate has passed through the filter, remove the filter and allow it to dry. 8. Get the mass of the dry filter paper and the sand. 9. Observe and record your results.
10. Follow steps 1–9 with different filters.
