Evolution by natural selection explains how new species emerge, as organisms adapt to their environments over generations.
Scientists believe that life first appeared on Earth 3800 million years ago in the form of bacteria. The millions of different species on Earth today, including plants and animals, have evolved from these earliest organisms. This great variety of life on Earth is called biodiversity.
) Fig. 5.9 Biodiversity Extinction
As we have seen, any species that does not successfully adapt to its environment will not survive. When the very last individual of a species dies, the species becomes extinct.
The place where an organism lives is called its habitat. Many species are at risk of extinction because the habitat they are adapted to is being destroyed. For example, the curlew was a common species of bird found in Ireland in the past, but as its breeding habitats have been lost it has come under threat of extinction.
? TEST TUBE
11. Explain the role of natural selection in the evolution of the millions of species that have existed on Earth.
12. Can you name an example of a species that no longer exists? Hint: finish the following commonly used phrase: ‘As dead as a …’. Why do you think this species became extinct?
13. Look up the current International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species (www.iucnredlist.org/en). Identify three other species that are at risk of extinction in Ireland.
