The solar system is made up of a star (the Sun) and the celestial objects that orbit it. The Sun is orbited by eight planets, their moons and smaller objects such as asteroids and comets. The solar system is held together by gravity.

The solar system contains four inner planets and four outer planets. The four inner planets are called terrestrial planets because they are made up of rock, like the Earth. They are: • Mercury • Venus • Earth • Mars
The four outer planets are called gas giants because they are mainly made of gases such as hydrogen and helium. They are:
