6. Explain how having webbed feet would provide a duck with an advantage in its environment. 7. What happens to organisms that are not well-adapted to their environment?
EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION 5.1 Which ‘beak shape’ is the best for eating different pasta shapes?
Equipment Pasta of different shapes, e.g. penne, spaghetti, fusilli Weigh boats Empty beakers Various types and sizes of clips (to represent birds’ beaks), e.g. paper clips, crocodile clips, bulldog clips Timer
Method 1. Place the different shapes of pasta in labelled weigh boats. 2. In pairs, select a type of clip and shape of pasta.
3. Using the clip, transfer as many pieces of pasta as possible to a beaker in 60 seconds (one person transfers while the other times).
4. Record the number of pieces of pasta transferred to the beaker in 60 seconds. 5. Follow steps 2–4 with different types of clips and shapes of pasta. 6. Swap roles with your partner and follow steps 2–5. 7. Compare your data to that of your partner. 8. As a class, record your results.
