GLOSSARY OF KEY TERMS


Capillaries: Very small blood vessels that link arteries and veins.


Carbon cycle: Explains how carbon is cycled through the living and non-living parts of the Earth.


Carbon footprint: The amount of greenhouse gases we emit into the atmosphere as a result of our activities.


Carbon sink: Anything that takes carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.


Carbon source: Anything that releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.


Cardiac muscle: Makes up the heart and can continuously pump blood.


Carnivore: Animals that only eat animals.


Catalyst: A substance that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction and is chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction.


Celestial object: Any natural body beyond the Earth’s atmosphere.


Cell: The basic building block of life with all the characteristics of life.


Cell membrane: Surrounds the cell, controlling which materials move in and out of it.


Chambers: The four spaces within the heart – the right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle and left ventricle.


Characteristic: A feature of an organism.


Characteristics of life: The seven common features that tell us if something is living.


Chemical change: When a new substance is formed. All chemical reactions are examples of a chemical change.


Chemical formula: Shows the chemical symbols and ratio of atoms for each element in a compound.


Chemical symbol: A symbol used to indicate each element.


Chlorophyll: A green pigment in the chloroplast that absorbs light energy and uses it to power chemical reactions.


Chloroplasts: Small organelles in the cytoplasm of plant cells where photosynthesis takes place. Contain the green pigment chlorophyll.


Chromatography: The method used to separate mixtures of substances that are in a solution.


Chromosome: A thread-like structure made up of DNA and protein, found in the nucleus of a cell.

Climate change: Changes in the Earth’s temperature and weather patterns.


Comet: A small lump of ice and dust that orbits the Sun.


Community: All the populations of plant and animal species that live together in an area.


Competition: The struggle between organisms for resources that are in short supply.


Compound: The substance made when two or more elements are chemically combined.


Computer: An electronic machine that can use and store data.


Concentrated solution: A solution that contains a large amount of solute in a small amount of solvent.


Concentration: The exact amount of one particular substance that is dissolved in another substance.


Conclusion: When the data produced during the investigation can be used to show that a hypothesis is or is not supported.


Condensation: When a gas is cooled, energy is taken from its particles. They slow down and move more closely together. The gas changes to a liquid.


Conductor: Any material that allows charge to flow through it easily.


Conservation: The careful management of the Earth’s ecosystems to protect them against harm caused by humans.


Consumers: Animals that get their food by eating plants or other animals.


Contact forces: Any forces that must be in direct contact with the object they are moving.


Contraception: The prevention of pregnancy using artificial or natural methods.


Corrosion: When a metal reacts with water and oxygen and a metal oxide forms.


Covalent bond: Formed when pairs of electrons are shared between two atoms.


Current: The flow of negatively charged electrons through a wire from the negative terminal of a battery to the positive terminal of a battery.


Cytoplasm: A jelly-like substance surrounded by the cell membrane. Contains the nucleus and dissolved substances, including oxygen.


Decomposer: An organism that feeds on dead plant and animal material.


Deforestation: The cutting down of trees.
