There are two future tenses in French, same as in English: the futur proche, which describes what is going to happen (je vais jouer : I’m going to play) and the futur simple, which is used to describe what will happen in the future (je jouerai : I will play). For regular -er and -ir verbs, it is formed by adding the following endings to the infinitive form:
Je jouerai Tu joueras
Il / elle / on jouera vendr-
Nous jouerons Vous jouerez
Ils / elles joueront
For regular -re verbs, drop the final -e before adding the ending, e.g.: vendre
il vendra
Tip: note that the endings are the same as those for the present tense of the verb avoir: J’ai
Tu as Il a
Nous avons Vous avez Ils ont
For the future tense of irregular verbs, it is important to learn the je form of the verb stem, as the endings are the same as for regular verbs. Once you have learnt the stem and the endings, you will know the whole verb.
