L’imparfait The imperfect is a pas t tense which is used to describe what something was like, what used to happen, what happened frequently, or what someone was doing in the past. e.g. Il portait toujours un pull bleu quand il était en deuxième année. He always used to wear a blue pullover when he was in the second year. Je jouais dans le jardin quand la cloche a sonné. I was playing in the garden when the bell rang.
To create the imperfect, take the nous form of the present tense, drop the ending -ons and add the endings in bold below to the verb stem (nous jouons Je jouais Tu jouais
jou-).
Nous jouions Vous jouiez
Il / elle / on jouait Ils / elles jouaient Don’t forget the i in the endings -ions and -iez; otherwise it’s the present tense!
