Welcome to the April edition of Personal Care Magazine, our in-cosmetics Global show issue. The trade show season is
now in full swing. I recently returned from China, where PCHi (Personal and Home Care
Ingredients) took place in Hangzhou. It was the first PCHi in its 18-year history to be in
Hangzhou, and there had been some doubts within the industry about moving it away from Shanghai. The annual PCHi show had hitherto alternated
between Guangzhou and Shanghai and it is said that show organiser Reed Sinopharm Exhibitions was unable to secure the highly desired Shanghai World Expo venue for this year’s event. In the end, the doubts were largely misplaced.
The new Hangzhou Grand Convention and Exhibition Centre is a ‘Goldilocks’ venue – not too big and not too small – and pleasantly airy. International visitor numbers were said to be up
on previous years and, while it is still a show heavily dominated by Chinese exhibitors, it does feel more of a global event.
Chinese beauty trends are largely similar to
Western trends. There was a noticeable accent on PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) anti-ageing skin care ingredients and scalp care ingredients – anti- hair loss, in particular. Furthermore, while the venue is somewhat
isolated from the traffic-clogged city centre and the beautiful, UNESCO-listed West Lake, Hangzhou itself is no backwater. It is a spacious city of 13 million with excellent
transport links, and it would be a shame if PCHi never returned to the place Marco Polo dubbed the ‘city of heaven’. That said, the word is PCHi will likely switch
back to Shanghai for 2028 after it returns to Guangzhou on 24-26 February 2027. Many of you will be reading this magazine at
in-cosmetics Global in Paris. Bonjour! We shall be sending a small army to France, including but not limited to myself, publisher Geoff King, business manager Chris Vincent and senior sales executive Kelly McCann. We are exhibiting at stand 1L108. Come say hi. Enjoy the magazine.
