The iconic temples of Angkor lie scattered over a vast area surrounded by jungle. Trekking peacefully from temple to temple on footpaths known to few, we escape the crowds and see them in a different light. In Cambodia’s far eastern province of Mondulkiri, we hike to waterfalls and tribal villages and enjoy the unique experience of a day walking with elephants at the Elephant Valley Project.
12 day tour itinerary
Day 1 Join tour in Phnom Penh. Walking tour around riverfront and Royal Palace. Day 2 Phnom Penh Visit the ‘Killing Fields’ and explore local markets on foot. Days 3/4 Elephant Valley Project We drive to Sen Monorom, provincial capital of Mondulkiri and go ‘walking with the herd’ through open grassland and forest in the company of elephants. Day 5 Waterfalls and forest At Andong Kraloeng we hike in the forest in search of great hornbill and douc monkeys. Day 6 Irrawaddy dolphins Drive to

colonial Kratie and take a boat on the Mekong in search of dolphins. Day 8 Village life Walk or cycle through villages on Koh Trong Island. Day 9 Ruined temples Stroll through the atmospheric and little visited site of Sambor Prei Kuk and drive to Siem Reap. Day 10 River walks We hike through jungle to Kbal Spean, the ‘River of a 1000 Lingas’ and visit the Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity and the Landmine museum. Day 10/11 Temples of Angkor and beyond The undisputed highlight of

our trip exploring Angkor on foot. We witness sunrise at Ta Prohm then spend the rest of the rest of the day walking on jungle trails that criss-cross this massive temple complex and atop eight metre high walls, once used by sentries in the Khmer days. Our trail fi nishes at the temple of Bayon - 216 huge stone faces witness our fi nal approach. Day 12 Tour ends in Siem Reap.

Accommodation: 7 nights standard hotel, 4 nights simple hotel. Meals: 11 breakfasts are included. Tour staff: Explore Tour Leader, driver(s). Transport: Bus, boat. Trekking details: We walk on 9 days with walks ranging from 1-6 hours. Many of the walks also involve sightseeing within these timings. In Mondulkiri there is a maximum elevation gain of 300m and we walk through jungle where paths may be slippery. Elsewhere the walking terrain is fl at and going is easy although you should be prepared for heat and humidity. Group size: Generally 10 - 16.
