Winter hiking in northern Tuscany’s Garfagnana Valley
A centre based winter trip to walk and snowshoe along the trails of the Garfagnana Valley - Tuscany’s hidden gem. Nestled between the ‘marble mountains’ of the Alpi Apuane and the rolling Apennines, this is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Depending on the level of the snowline (usually from 800 to 1200 metres above sea level) we can expect three or four of the walks to involve the use of snowshoes - suitable for beginners with equipment and instruction provided.
8 day tour itinerary
Day 1 Join tour Pisa airport and transfer to our cosy agriturismo (farmstay) near Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. Day 2 Orecchiella Natural Park We walk and snowshoe in the Apennines to the summit at Pania del Corfi no (1610m) for superb views of the snow shrouded mountains. Day 3 Garfagnana Valley From the agriturismo, discover the lower Garfagnana Valley and villages a long the River Se rchio. Day 4 Pisa and Lucca Optional visit by train to Lucca for a cycle or a walk on the medieval city walls or choose to explore Pisa and see the famous Leaning Tower. Day 5 Campocatino Shepherds Village Walk and snowshoe from the shores of Lake Vagli to the site of a medieval shepherds’ village in a glacial cirque. Day 6 Alpi Apuane Snowshoe to Monte Sumbra (1500m). Day 7 Tuscan Emiliano Park Snowshoe through beech forest and then along a

Centre-based in the Serchio Valley
We base ourselves at a comfortable and welcoming agriturismo (working farm and guesthouse) situated in the Serchio Valley with easy access to some of Northern Tuscany’s fi nest walking. Surrounded by the magnifi cent scenery of the Alpi Apuane Mountains, guests are accommodated in both the main farm building (a former barn) and independent chalets which have been converted from the farm outhouse buildings.

Accommodation: 7 nights standard agriturismo. Meals: 7 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 4 dinners are included. Tour staff: Explore Tour Leader / driver. Transport: Minibus, train. Trekking details: This is a 5-day trek with individual day walks of between 5 and 6 hours. Depending on the level of the snowline (usually from 800 to 1200 metres above sea level at the time we operate this trip) we can expect three, possibly four of the walks to involve the use of snowshoes in at least part. Snowshoeing is fun and suitable for beginners with all equipment and instruction provided. Group size: Generally 10 - 16.
