Exploring Ladakh on foot


A walking holiday focusing on the people and culture of Ladakh, a Tibetan Buddhist enclave in India on the Himalayan Plateau. Travelling off the beaten track and staying in simple village homestays and guesthouses, we mingle with a people whose traditions can be traced back along the old trading routes of the Silk Road. We visit ancient monasteries, trek through an incredible high altitude desert landscape and explore the colourful markets of Leh.

Day 1 Join tour in Delhi. Day 2/3 Leh Early morning fl ight to Leh where we have time to acclimatise, walking tour of markets and visit hill-top stronghold of Tsemo Gomba. Day 4 Countryside guesthouse Drive to Stok, walk to monasteries and explore river valley. Day 5/6 Hemis We drive via Matho to our camp near Hemis Monastery. We spend the day exploring on foot and visiting the Hermitage. Day 7 High passes We hike past a

Day 3: 2 hours Leh


Monks’ retreat up to a pass of 4572m before descending. Day 8 Indus Valley Trek across the Kildeyrmala Pass (4651m) rewarding us with views down into the Indus Valley. Day 9 Whitewater rafting Join the Thiksey Monastery monks at their morning prayers and later have the option to go whitewater rafting along the Indus River. Day 10 Giant Buddha We hike up to the village of Likir and visit the monastery with its giant statue

of Maitreya Buddha. Day 11 Yangthang hike Trek across two small passes to Yangthang. Day 12 Alchi frescoes Visit the wonderful Kashmiri-style frescoes at Alchi Monastery before driving to Leh. Day 13 Delhi Morning fl ight across the Himalaya, afternoon free to explore. Day 14 Tour ends in Delhi.

Accommodation: 2 nights simple hotels, 3 nights standard hotels, 3 nights simple guesthouse, 4 nights basic camping, 1 night simple homestay. Meals: 12 breakfasts, 8 lunches, 10 dinners are included. Tour staff: Explore Tour Leader, activity guides, camp crew, drivers, local guides. Transport: Bus, fl ight. Trekking details: We hike on 7 days with walks ranging from 2 to 6 hours on rocky paths. Altitude gains are moderate (200m or less) on all but 2 of the walks; days 7 and 8 have gains of 672m and 951m respectively. These walks can be opted out of if desired. Due to our location on the Himalayan Plateau, all walks are at altitude and the highest pass is at 4651m. Group size: Generally 10 - 16.
