FUNCHAL CARRAPATEIRA Walking on the Western Algarve
Follow the Rota Vicentina along the coast to Cabo Sao Vicente, the southwestern most point of Portugal and continental Europe. Hike between villages along cliff tops, through dunes and beside rocky shorelines, through the natural park of ‘Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina’. Enjoy the local food and wine en route.
8 day itinerary
Day 1 Your journey starts in the coastal village of Zambujeira do Mar in the Algarve, your base for two nights. Day 2 Cliff tops After a short taxi transfer to Almograve, walk along the way-marked footpath ‘Rota Vicentina’ via Cavalheiro village and the lighthouse at Cape Sardao back along the cliffs to Zambujeira do Mar. Day 3 Odeceixe Continue south along the coast walking through dunes and along rocky shores, via the fi shing village of Azenha do Mar, to

Day 2: 7hrs Zambujeira do Mar
Odeceixe. Day 4 Aljezur Following an irrigation channel inland walk through agricultural land, and open shrubland covered in heather and fragrant plants. A taxi takes you from the end of the walk to your hotel in Aljezur. Day 5 Carrapateira Take a short taxi ride to Arrifana from where, if the tide is low, you can walk along the rocks and sandy beaches to Carrapateira. (There is also an inland route). Day 6 Vila do Bispo Walk to the historic town of Vila do Bispo along
Odeceixe Vale de Telha
the shoreline as the tide allows. Spot fi shermen perched high on the cliffs. Day 7 Cabo Sao Vicente Walk through pastures and along narrow fi shermens’ paths to the southwestern most point of mainland Portugal. Travel back to Vila do Bispo by taxi. Day 8 Your journey ends in Vila do Bispo.
