My Shell Ah!

perfect balance, meaning that parents are more likely to favour and purchase convenient products that suit their busy lifestyles. Lastly, if dads adopt a more domesticated

role within the household – for example, engaging with the more ‘hands-on’ aspects associated with raising children - brands may need to deliver more inclusive-themed products that will encourage usage from both parents.

Big Kid Little Kid

‘Big Kid Little Kid’ is a range of formulations, carefully created for both parents to use with their young children. The concept focuses on the need to be innovative with textures and colours, with the overarching aim of making children’s personal care products more enjoyable and engaging to use. The formulations within ‘Big Kid Little Kid’ support the idea of relationship-building, while instilling a positive attitude towards looking after their body and the significance of personal hygiene from a young age. By turning bath time, into bath slime, and

creating soothing conditioners for baby creases, Surfachem’s Big Kid Little Kid concept adds a splash of excitement, whilst also breaking away from traditional stereotypes. Big Kid Little Kid is one of many personal

care concepts Surfachem has carefully created at its development lab in Huddersfield (3M Buckley Innovation Centre). Utilising market research to identify the latest cosmetics trends, Surfachem are industry experts in ingredient selection, formulation design and stability testing.

As part of the concept development, Surfachem invited children to get creative and design logos during the Bradford Science Festival in July 2019. These were displayed during last year’s SCS Formulate where the concept was launched.

Conclusion

Family dynamics, sustainability and ingredient transparency are all influencing children’s personal care product development. Big Kid Little Kid acknowledges these trends and demonstrates potential opportunities with solutions. Brand owners can utilise new technologies and ingredients in order to provide highly specialised products, therefore differentiating in an increasingly crowded personal care space. Alternatively, current personal care products on the market can be repositioned in order to align with the consumer and societal trends identified by Surfachem.
