Energy-efficient LED bulbs can be installed with controls that turn lights off when not in use, while natural daylight can be exploited by installing solar tubes. Greywater harvesting can ease potable water requirements for activities such as flushing toilets and watering landscape. Facilities located near existing infra struc ture can limit travel and allow occupants to take advantage of public trans porta tion. Profitable opportunities to acting sustainably should also be explored, such as systems that generate value from unavoidable refuse (e.g. using waste as fuel or fertiliser) and recycling, thus lowering disposal costs. Companies can also experiment with processes that increase sustainability while improving the bottom- line. For example, cold pressing methods to extract essential oils, and cold emulsification processes offer advantages in terms of production time, energy and water usage, costs, and emissions.


By committing to sustainable practices and encouraging innovation across operations, manufacturing can make a significant contribution to sustainability. Importantly, efforts can be amplified in the regions in which companies operate by working with local communities to upgrade local infrastructure to sustainable technologies, and making these available


to smaller, marginalised groups who might not otherwise have access.


Distribution By 2030, global freight volumes will grow by 70% compared to 2015. Transport has a major environmental impact, accounting for a disproportionate amount of global energy consumption and CO2


emissions, with the


majority of emissions coming from the burning of fossil fuels. More troubling is that projections indicate that CO2


emissions may


grow by as much as 40% by 2040 in this sector.


While this offers a bleak assessment,


widespread inefficient practices also present business opportunities. Pioneering companies are leveraging technology to offer greater visibility and to better manage supply-chains by pursuing advances in autonomous ships and trucks, port robotics, and drones to automate their distribution operations. Firms that adapt their practices can lower costs by improving the fuel-efficiency of delivery vehicles, while reducing emissions and air pollution. Similarly, switching to hybrid, biofuel, or electric powered vehicles can also reduce emissions, as can shifting methods of transport to those with a lower carbon footprint (e.g. to sea or rail). Yet, companies


need not rely on their own fleet of delivery vehicles, as virtual marketplaces for connecting shippers have proliferated, allowing logistics-providers to combine multiple shipments from various shippers to lower costs, reduce emissions, and lessen the number of empty truck backhauls. Companies may decide to consolidate distribution networks to minimise the distance to retailers, while others opt for larger container trucks or warehouse optimisation strategies that include the use of largescale distribution centers to reduce unnecessary journeys. Alternative distribution channels present new opportunities for companies to get products to consumers, while offering potential sustainability benefits. Direct-to- consumer models such as those offered by Beauty Pie, deliver affordable, luxury cosmetics to consumers while cutting out intermediaries. Makeup-booths and vending-machines have multiplied across Asia. Booths are located in public areas with high foot-traffic and allow customers to evaluate personalised cosmetics recommendations with the help of facial recognition systems. Vending-machines have long been used in Asian markets for cosmetics, but are now emerging in Western markets and offer another tantalising option for centralising
