n Lottie Croker – in-cosmetics, UK Richard Scott – Editor, Personal Care
Celebrating its 30th birthday this year, in- cosmetics Global returns to Barcelona this June. With such a longstanding history as a hotbed of industry innovation, thousands of R&D professionals are set to come together in search of the most exciting ingredients on the market, plus the latest insights and guidance from renowned industry experts. As one of the most popular areas of the
three-day exhibition, the free-to-attend Formulation Lab returns in 2020 with 21 sessions that will provide R&D professionals from cosmetic or contract manufacturers with the specialist knowledge, skills and techniques needed to create winning formulations. The hour-long practical sessions will see industry experts from top personal care ingredient suppliers – such as Evonik and BASF – impart their formulation expertise and provide helpful hints and tips to help professionals develop unique solutions. As part of a brand-new partnership for 2020, Organic Cosmetic Science School, Formula Botanica, will host three paid-for sessions that are open to all visitors.
Natural, clean and green The ‘clean beauty’ megatrend has been pervasive in the beauty and personal care industry for several years, showing no sign

of diminishing. Reflecting this unabating trend, the in-cosmetics Global Formulation Lab will host an array of sessions for R&D professionals looking for the latest inspiration in green and natural formulations.
Claudia Brunn, manager Global Product Development Surfactants & Oleochemistry at BASF will run a session on Innovations in natural and mild cleansing. With its new natural anionic surfactant, Texapon SFA (INCI Disodium 2-Sulfolaurate), Claudia will teach attendees how this alternative surfactant enables the creation of ultra- mild, stable cleansing formulations with a special foam sensation.
In a session on natural and individual cosmetic foams, Özge Yüksel Özel, technical business development manager of Personal Care at Azelis, will help participants create their own face-wash foam adapted to their personal needs with a wide selection of the newest innovative active ingredients and mild, natural PEG- free surfactants. In addition, further application forms such as emulsion pump foams and their sensory properties will be presented to give various possibilities that meet the trend of environmentally friendly skin care products.
Finding a natural and aesthetically
pleasing solution for the stabilisation of emulsions can be a challenge for formulators. Laura Ratz, application scientist at Nordmann will help attendees find an all- natural solution for stabilisation and rheology modification of emulsions, by demonstrating how to make a cold- processed emulsion stabilised with natural hectorite, as well as presenting different natural solutions that will help R&D professionals create stable emulsions for all needs.
Elsewhere in Formulating lipsticks using
Natpure Xfine, Véronique Guyot Ferreol, senior R&D manager at Sensient Cosmetic Technologies, will highlight a new generation of natural extracts in powder form, derived from fruit and vegetable juices, which allows formulators to create natural high performing lipsticks. Visitors are also invited to Go clean and natural with a new texture transforming gel to milk detox balm, led by Benjamin Schwartz, senior personal care application specialist at AAK Inc. Attendees will learn how to formulate a new type of detoxifying cleansing balm that is mindful of the need for high-performance and minimal formulations that are gentle on the skin and kind to the environment.
