Considerations for Clients with Musculoskeletal Issues CHAPTER 15
3. The textbook discusses common conditions of the upper extremity, spine, and lower extremity. After reviewing the descriptions of these conditions, address what programming considerations you need to make for each of the conditions listed here. Additionally, outline the common conditions affecting each joint/area listed and any other notes you wish to make. The section on shoulder injuries has been completed as a sample.

Common Conditions/ Injuries
Impingement syndrome Program Design Considerations
First, address postural imbalances that may cause a decrease in space between the acromion process and humeral head (e.g., forward rounded shoulders or exaggerated kyphosis).
Next, strengthen the scapular stabilizing muscles, including the rotator cuff.
Then, improve strength of the anterior shoulder muscles and pectoralis major through controlled pushing motion.
Finally, introduce overhead movements as functionally necessary. Instruct clients to perform the exercise in the scapular plane (i.e., shoulder positioned 30 degrees anterior to the frontal plane) to prevent impingement.
