CHAPTER 7 Resting Assessments and Anthropometric Measurements


2. Assessments should be conducted only after you have reviewed the preparticipation health screening and conducted the initial interview to identify important program variables based on readiness to change, stage of change, and identified goals. In this case, the client is interested in improving overall lifestyle and specifically targeting muscular strength and flexibility. Consider what assessments target those goals (refer to Table 7-1). Conducting resting measurements such as heart rate and blood pressure is useful, but it may not be necessary to conduct a full body-composition assessment (keep in mind the client’s goals). You can use the first session to evaluate basic movement patterns. You might also consider evaluating core strength, muscular strength, and flexibility. The client is not interested in performance-related benefits, so it is not necessary to evaluate skill-related components.


EVALUATE AND CREATE 1. Consider the following sample response:


Personal Trainer: You’ve made some great progress over the course of the past several months. I understand you are excited for your vacation; it sounds fantastic! I also understand losing weight is a priority for you. Can you tell me why you want to lose this amount of weight?


Client: I’ve already lost 20 pounds working with you and I feel I have more to lose and this vacation is a motivator for me.


Personal Trainer: What is your current understanding of healthy weight loss?


Client: I know losing weight is challenging, but I’ve already accomplished it. I do know that losing weight successfully means balancing nutrition with activity.


Personal Trainer: Yes, that is correct. There is a relationship between the types of foods we consume and how our bodies respond. In the past, when you monitored your weight loss, what did that progress look like and what types of efforts did you make to ensure an outcome of weight loss?


Client: I would say, on average, I was able to lose 1.5 pounds per week. I worked hard and tracked my food intake and made sure I scheduled my exercise sessions with you. I also integrated stress-management techniques and stopped piling my plate so high with outside responsibilities that didn’t relate to my job or my family.


Personal Trainer: Thank you for sharing that with me. If it’s ok with you, I’d like to share some other factors to keep in mind as they relate to healthy weight loss.


Client: Yes, please. I’d like to learn more.


Personal Trainer: Healthy and sustainable weight loss occurs steadily and gradually, rather than all at once. Generally, this is at a rate of 1 to 2 pounds each week. This is accomplished by making ongoing lifestyle changes. We have four weeks until your vacation is scheduled to begin, so a realistic weight loss goal would have you losing 4 to 8 pounds before you leave. Does that make sense?


Client: Yes, I suppose it does. I didn’t really consider how short my timeline is before I leave for vacation. I’d still like to lose 40 pounds, but it doesn’t sound like losing that much weight is realistic within that timeframe. Even if I could lose 8 more pounds before my vacation, I think I would feel happy about that accomplishment!
