Considerations for Clients with Obesity CHAPTER 12 10. B. 5–10%
Personal trainers should discuss with clients that a weight loss of 5 to 10% in people with overweight and obesity has been shown to significantly improve health-related outcomes for obesity-related comorbidities, including preventing and managing type 2 diabetes and improving abnormal lipids, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, stress incontinence, and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
The Exercise Professional’s Guide to Personal Training, p. 574 THINK IT THROUGH 1. Increasing Daily Physical Activity
Since Dave has identified that he’d like to be more physically active and you know that he leads a sedentary life outside of his planned workout sessions with you, help him brainstorm ways to build in more opportunities for activity. Review the ACE Mover Method™ and the ACE ABC Approach™ and think about how this philosophy and technique can be used to provide education about exercise guidelines, NEAT, and setting specific goals.
2. Accurate Self-monitoring
Ideas for self-monitoring efforts include maintaining a dietary and physical-activity log. Another option is to refer clients to various community programs in your area, established commercial weight-loss programs, and individualized dietary plans from registered dietitians.
