CHAPTER 13 Considerations for Clients with Chronic Disease EVALUATE AND CREATE
1. Use the following table to evaluate how the exercise guidelines for diabetes and hypertension compare to the general evidence-based recommendations for cardiorespiratory and muscular training. The general recommendations have been filled in for your reference. Make note of similarities and any differences you observe between the exercise recommendations for the conditions in this activity and expand upon this activity as you see fit to enhance your learning.
General Evidence-based Recommendations
Cardiorespiratory Training
Frequency ≥5 days/week of moderate exercise, or ≥3 days/ week of vigorous exercise, or a combination of moderate and vigorous exercise on ≥3–5 days/ week is recommended
Intensity
Moderate intensity Below VT1 HR; can talk comfortably
 40–59% HRR or V •
O2 R RPE 12–13 (6–20 scale)
Vigorous intensity HR from VT1 to just below VT2 60–89% HRR or V
• O2 R RPE 14–17 (6–20 scale)
Light-to-moderate intensity exercise may be beneficial in deconditioned individuals.
Time
30–60 minutes/day of purposeful moderate exercise, or 20–60 minutes/day of vigorous exercise, or a combination of moderate and vigorous exercise per day is recommended for most adults.
Type
