Figure 2: Effects on the oxidation stability of two tocopherol products DF Toco 70 non GMO and DF TocoBalance in two model O/W Emulsions with DF GSC SG (O/W Emulsion A) or distearyldimonium chloride (O/W Emulsion B) as emulsifiers. All oxidation stability values shown in this graph are calculated in relation to the vehicle of O/W Emulsion B (relative oxidation stability value = 1.0). Tocopherol products DF Toco 70 non GMO and DF TocoBalance show improvement in the oxidation stability in O/W Emulsion A and O/W Emulsion B. In O/W Emulsion A oxidation stability was more than three times higher in the presence of DF Toco 70 non GMO, in relation to its respective vehicle. In O/W Emulsion B, DF Toco 70 non GMO shows a threefold improvement in oxidation stability compared to its vehicle. DF TocoBalance causes a more than 4.9 times improvement in the oxidation stability value as compared to the vehicle of O/W Emulsion B and stabilizes O/W Emulsion A by more than 1.7 times compared to the vehicle of O/W Emulsion A
stabilizing ingredients, the formulator ultimately determines the basic character of the interphase of the product without knowing the effectiveness of the antioxidant system. However, our results on the oxidative
stability of O/W emulsions confirm that some degree of planning should precede the use of natural antioxidants such as tocopherols to ensure reliable product protection.
How does the interphase of an emulsion affect the antioxidative potential of tocopherols? Tocopherols are in the focus of the cosmetic and food industry as natural antioxidants and their mode of action has been extensively studied in the current literature, though, their interaction with co-antioxidants and other influencing factors has not yet been
conclusively determined. Especially with regard to the practical
application of tocopherols for product protection, there is still room for exploration. Evonik has therefore set itself the task of shedding light on this subject with its newly developed oxidation test method. By comparing two different model emulsions (Tables 1 and 2), which differ mainly
