INTERVIEW

Three, silicone alternatives for properties such as thermal protection, conditioning, and shine.

TP: I am seeing more natural film formers. Is the quality there? Do they do the job as well as silicones, in your opinion? AE: There are some good quality natural film formers available, and many show comparable performance to silicones per the supplier data. Natural film formers are especially efficacious when they consist of various approaches including varying molecular weights and hydrophobicity.

TP: You are currently the NYSCC chair-elect ahead of starting your role as chair in January. Have you been doing much preparation? AE: The NYSCC chair-elect role is really about learning about the organisation internally and gaining an appreciation for the processes that are necessary to create the rewarding membership experience that the NYSCC is known for. Since I started in January, I have learned a bit more about how the chapter operates, what our capabilities are and what some of the chapter’s needs are. I’ve been understanding the fine details of the chapter in order to lead the chapter most effectively next year. In addition to observing and learning, I have

been preparing for next year by having input in chapter business, brainstorming what our programmes and our overall initiatives will look like and surveying the opportunity for filling executive board and volunteer positions.

TP: Without giving the game away, what are you excited about delivering in your role as NYSCC chair next year? AE: One of things that will be important for next year for the NYSCC – and for the industry in general - is being inspired by other areas of science. There’s great potential for that, and so we’ll have programming around other scientific fields and how it can be applied to the cosmetic industry. I’m also quite excited about increasing the scale of the chapter’s outreach efforts. Another piece for next year’s initiatives will be

growing the NYSCC membership in a meaningful way. That means growing not just in size but making sure that we have a highly engaged membership. It’s also about making sure that NYSCC

membership is available and known to other professionals within the cosmetic industry and students. There are a lot of entrepreneurs and brands in the beauty space – indies and so on – and they could leverage some of the resources within the NYSCC.

TP: How would you go about doing that? AE: I will work with the membership chair to ensure that the NYSCC is reaching its full potential in terms of recruiting cosmetic professionals from all sectors of the industry and academia. Further, it should be known that the NYSCC is open to all within the cosmetic industry, not just chemists/ scientists or those at large companies. We’re obviously rooted in science, but the cosmetic industry is not only formulation science and research - it’s regulatory, marketing, sales, product development/project management, etc. We all play a very integral role in what the consumer sees on the shelf.
