5: Boosting efficacy Not all products can be multifunctional, and in those cases, formulators should ensure that the consumer is still getting value for their money. More than ever, consumers are looking to find where the value lies in their products, and one place to start is with the effects on skin. Brands should ensure that their products have good efficacy in order to justify the cost of the products and reassure consumers that they work as intended.

Clinical trials are the gold standard

to assess but these incur costs which are often prohibitive for the final formula. Instead, brands often conduct user trials on their formulation, with self-assessment questionnaires throughout the trial, to gauge whether the product works and if consumers see a noticeable benefit. These still come at a price, and formulators need to be confident that their user trials will

have positive results, which can be used in the promotion and marketing of the final product. The key to achieving this is to use actives ingredients with robust supporting data, and ingredients which can help to boost the actives effects. Baycusan C 1000 (by Covestro) is such a

material; a high performing film former which has been shown to boost the effects of several well-known actives in clinical tests. Seven
