INTERVIEW
“For us, a wrinkle is not just something that you have to fill with hyaluronic acid. We must understand the original reason for
this imperfection” Òscar Expósito, co-founder and chief scientific officer,
Vytrus Biotech
to say, to the ‘dark side’ of the business! He’s very strategic. I’m more of a creative. Science. Marketing. Albert is more of a businessman. Management. Finance. If we were parts of a car, I would be the
accelerator and Albert would be the brake. We are a very good team.
TP: Are you friends, or is it just a business relationship? OE: I love him! I have spent the past 16 years of my life with him, with many ups and downs – including in our personal lives. But there is always trust and respect between us. He trusts my point of view; I trust his point of view. I believe this is something special. Rare. It’s why
we both want to keep the business and construct something together.
TP: I think they call that a bromance! Vytrus is renowned for developing ingredients with innovative claims. How do you decide to develop your ingredients? OE: We develop the ingredients based on what we discover in nature. We are not just following the market. As chief scientific officer, I’m always looking at
what is extraordinary in nature. When we discover what nature says, then we think about how is applicable in cosmetics. For us, a wrinkle is not just something
that you have to fill with hyaluronic acid. We must understand the original reason for this imperfection. When you go deep in the skin, you will see at
the root of the wrinkle there are some cells dividing slower than the surrounding cells. Because of that, you see the wrinkle. We, as scientists, try to solve that original
asynchrony between the cells. When you solve this, you solve the wrinkle. This is the Vytrus philosophy, and we can
apply it with different technologies for different applications.
TP: Are you doing more custom projects for beauty brands? OE: Yes, we have several custom projects. Some customers like our philosophy and ask us to develop, for example, a hair care ingredient or an ingredient for dark spots in line with the philosophy that I mentioned before.
TP: In May, you announced that you were granted a patent in the United States to protect your active ingredients with rejuvenating and healing activity on skin cells. Do you have any more patents pending? OE: We have around 12 patents in the process of acceptance. We also have more than 30 trade secrets that are cheaper than patents but are very
