The Bioanalysis and Bioanalysis Zone editorial teams are delighted to bring you the fourth edition of The Bioanalysis Glossary, which continues to be regarded as an essential resource for everyone who works in bioanalysis or related fields. A total of 14 leading bioanalytical experts have been working closely with the editorial team to provide a comprehensive update, reflecting the constantly evolving and dynamic field of bioanalysis.


This guide will be particularly useful for those moving into the field or working with bioanalytical laboratories for the first time, and as a reference for experienced bioanalysts writing reports, research papers or presentations. Aiding the harmonization of the terminology used in the bioanalytical community within and between companies, universities and individuals has been a key aim of the glossary since it was launched, as it is essential that scientists speak the same bioanalytical language, in an increasingly globalized field.


We have included core bioanalytical terminology to ensure that it can be used consistently and – considering the vital role that bioanalysis plays in drug development and other related fields such as metabolomics, antidoping testing and therapeutic drug monitoring – important terminology relevant to bioanalysis has also been incorporated. This emphasizes the fact that bioanalysis is more than just about providing data. Bioanalysts should be engaged in discussions relating to all stages of drug development, and a better understanding of related areas such as pharmacokinetics and how the data will be used leads to more insightful and productive bioanalysis.
