381. product ion The ion derived from a charged molecular species in a tandem mass spectrometer after it passesthrough the primary mass filter (Q1) and is then fragmented in the instrument’s collision cell. Also known as ‘daughter ion’.
382. protein binding The binding of compounds, with typical reference to xenobiotics, to large plasma proteins such as albumin. In the body, the extent of protein binding of a drug varies according to the chemistry of the drug itself and certain disease states, and only the unbound fraction is considered to be freely able to move into tissues or have activity at cellular surface receptors. When aiming to analyze the unbound fraction, ex vivo parameters such as temperature and pH need to also be controlled.
